We can only display a small selection of upholstery options online. These tend to be the more popular, functional materials that are ideal for use in busy, demanding care home and other contract and commercial environments, There are many, many more available from the UK's leading textile manufacturers.

Faux Leathers

A 'faux leather' fabric is not a just a material that replicates the look and feel of real leather. It is a fabric-based material that is coated with a PVC polymer layer that gives it its leather (sometimes plain or patterned) appearance. Low quality PVC (PU) fabrics found on many imported products for the domestic market will break down much sooner than contract upholstery.

Wear and durability is measured in 'Martindale Rubs' - the number of physical rubs the fabric endures before the surface begins to break up or fray. If a fabric has a score of up to 25,000 Martindale Rubs, it is graded as suitable for everyday general domestic use on sofas and chairs.

The faux leathers featured on this website range from a minimum of 100,000 Martindale Rubs to 400,000 rubs with the majority rated at 200,000 Martindale Rubs.

Vinyls

Vinyl is a solid synthetic plastic made from polyvinyl choride (PVC). It does not have a separate fabric backing. As a result it is usually more durable and less susceptible to scratches and punctures.

Print Fabrics

There is a huge choice of print fabrics in floral, checked, striped and geometric designs that are available upon request. These fabrics are usually printed to order and most manufacturers stipulate a minimum m² for a supply print run. For example a minimum 6m² supply of print fabric from the manufacturer would upholster about 10 dining chairs. We also process online orders for single items and, as a result,  we can only display upholstery options for the limited number of fabrics that we can order 'off the roll' in the quantity required.  

We are, however, happy to upholstery larger orders in the print fabric of your choice. The difficulty is finding the right one., there are so many. HOW HARD-WEARING IS EACH FABRIC?

'Martindale Rubs' is a crucial test used in the upholstery trade to measure the durability of fabrics. It is carried out on fabrics to determine their abrasion levels and suitability for various uses i.e. light decorative use, general use or heavy commercial use. 

The fabric being tested is continually rubbed by discs of worsted wool until signs of wear becomes apparent. A material with a Martindale rating of over 30,000 rubs is considered a commercial grade fabric. It can be used on heavy duty furniture and would be suitable for any commercial environment.
